A24 very smartly waited until many folks were on...

Via Indiewire:

A24 very smartly waited until many folks were on actual Spring Break to release [Spring Breakers], which debuted to a lot of buzz at Venice and Toronto last fall, and then got another buzz boost at SXSW last week. It paid off.

Starring Disney Channel alums Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens in a not-so-Disney tale of a group of college-aged girls who decide to rob a fast food restaurant to pay for Spring Break, the film grossed a massive $270,000 from just 3 theaters in New York and Los Angeles. That made for a $90,000 per-theater-average, which is by far the best of 2013 so far and one of the 10 best per-theater averages ever for a live action film.

It’s also a remarkable number compared to the other four films Korine directed. In just three days in three theaters, “Spring Breakers” has already outgrossed all of them: “Mister Lonely,” “Trash Humpers,” “Julien Donkey Boy” and “Gummo.” In fact, it will have very likely outgrossed the combined final gross of all four of those films by next weekend.

It clearly helped that it’s by far Korine’s most marketable film to date, not to mention the presence of Gomez and Hudgens, and James Franco — who earned raves for his supporting role in the film and has has essentially become the box office king of March 2013 with two films that couldn’t be more different. His lead role in Disney’s “Oz: The Great and Powerful” was atop the studio charts for the second weekend in a row and is all set to pass $200 million soon.

“Breakers” will expand nationwide on March 22nd — which is the film’s true test of crossover appeal. But so far, “Spring Breakers” is looking like it could be huge.

I don’t fully agree on the crossover appeal. A24’s marketing positions Spring Breakers as a fairly standard-issue hard-R party flick (see trailer above). Mainstream moviegoers unfamiliar with Korine’s work will either be pleasantly surprised it’s more than that or disappointed it’s not what they expected. I foresee more of the latter, with people feeling like they were tricked into seeing a weirdo hyperstylized art house film. I’d love to be wrong though.

Also via Indiewire:

Korine has built up a reputation as an original, off-kilter filmmaker, which gave the flick and its cast a maverick edge from the start. But A24 pushed a social-media, youth-oriented campaign, chose South by Southwest as its American premiere close to opening rather than Sundance (the showing got significant media attention) along with old media press coverage, including some strong reviews, particularly in New York, to build up this strong gross.

Korine appeared at multiple shows at the film’s Los Angeles venue, boosting its performance at the Arclight, but the film clearly had a life of its own that would have made it look strong at half the gross. It has been difficult for specialized companies to break through to a younger audience, which is more attuned to mass-media marketing than specialized low-budget, review-oriented campaigns. A24 seems, at least with this films, seems to have shown what moving beyond conventional means and, with a youth-oriented story, at least initially there can be a major response.

To A24’s credit, they’ve done a great job with their strategy.

Build festival buzz for the film crowd. Get the Franco/Hudgens/Gomez fanbases hyped through gossip sites and social media. Sell the film to mainstream moviegoers as ‘Hudgens & Gomez Gone Wild’. And fans of the auteur writer/director show up regardless. Then just hope it opens well and benefits from positive critical reception.

The film could be a legitimate success; it’s certainly Korine’s most accessible work to date. But I strongly suspect the irony and satire in Spring Breakers will be lost on many (if the majority of reactions from my Friday night showing were any indication). Which could stir up controversy, bringing in more people wanting to see what the fuss is about. Regardless, I’m glad to see Korine’s work reaching a larger audience.

Jamie Hawkesworth Photographs Ai Weiwei in his Beijing Studio...

Jamie Hawkesworth Photographs Ai Weiwei in his Beijing Studio for AnOther Magazine

As of the 11th, around 12,000 “Harlem Shake” videos...

As of the 11th, around 12,000 “Harlem Shake” videos had been posted since the start of the month and they’d already been watched upwards of 44 million times.

YouTube Trends: The Harlem Shake Has Exploded

It’s easy to account for the instant popularity of the form. For one thing, the video is short. At only 30 seconds long, fan-made versions are less burdensome to create than many other memes, and accessible viewing for those stumbling across the creations online. It’s also simple. In order to make a Harlem Shake video, all one would need is someone with an obscured face dancing while at least one other person acts normal, and finally some kind of descent into uninhibited body-rocking.

“The beauty of this one is its sheer simplicity,” says YouTube trends manager Kevin Alloca. “There are really only a few basic elements and it can be effectively reproduced with little technical know-how, but it also leaves enough room for people to make it their own. It’s not dependent on language either, which makes its potential audience even bigger.”

Co.Create | See A Brief History Of Internet Phenomenon “Harlem Shake”

The perfect meme template? Created accidentally by a group of skater kids from Cali?

I’ve been on a Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds kick the past...

I’ve been on a Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds kick the past week in anticipation of their upcoming album Push The Sky Away (Feb 19th).

This video, for the title track from their previous album (2008’s Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!), is an all-time favorite of mine. One of those rare instances where the concept and visuals are just perfect for the track. Shot in a single take, directed by Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard.

REM’s famous ballad “Losing My Religion”...

REM’s famous ballad “Losing My Religion” digitally reworked with a major scale.

A bizarre but interesting experiment.
